Professor Susan Jones (Oxford) will speak on Grace in Twentieth-Century Literature and Dance.
“I will explore modernist responses to notions of “grace” in a literary aesthetics more frequently associated with the beleaguered body and with images of disintegration and fragmentation. By focusing on the representation of physical movement, and by suggesting that contemporary experimental dance occupied an often neglected but important influence on literary modernism, I will examine two distinct responses to grace in the twentieth century. One envisions the recovery of grace in the salvation of the human spirit, and the other, highly skeptical response, turns to the innovations of technology as a manifestation of the grace of machine movement.”
Susan Jones is the author of Literature, Modernism and Dance, published by Oxford University Press.
